The Lax̱g̱altsʼap Village Government consists of six councillors and one chief councillor, elected by the members of Lax̱g̱altsʼap community. These elected officials oversee local programs, policies, budget, and laws. Elections take place every four years.
The council operates under Nisg̱a’a Nation lawsand is responsible for local municipal issues. Lax̱g̱altsʼap chief and councillors also sit on the Wilp Si’ayuukhl Nisg̱a’a, the 36-member legislative body that governs the whole Nisg̱a’a Nation.
The Lax̱g̱altsʼap Village Government is supported by a team of professional staff who help implement their vision by drafting policies, creating and managing programs, and providing administrative services, all guided by the village’s strategic plan.

Chief and council meet on the third Wednesday and Thursday of every month, usually from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Community members are welcome to attend meetings.

Wednesday is generally a Committee of the Whole meeting, which allows for deeper and less formalized discussion.

Thursday’s meeting is dedicated to regular council business, including receiving and reviewing reports from senior staff, adopting monthly financial statements, and providing direction on policy and projects.

Four times a year, the village government hosts community meetings which include a dedicated time for public input. This is an opportunity for Lax̱g̱altsʼap residents to ask questions and raise concerns with their elected officials.
Elections happen every four years on the first Wednesday of November. This date is legislated by Nisg̱a’a law and is the same for all Nisg̱a’a villages, the three urban locals, and the Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government. The most recent election was in November 2024.
