FireSmart Coordinator

JOB SUMMARY:

Lax̱g̱alts’ap Village Government is seeking an organized and community-oriented individual to serve as the FireSmart Coordinator within the Lax̱g̱alts’ap Fire and Rescue Department. This role plays a critical part in wildfire preparedness, prevention, and mitigation within the Nisga’a Village of Lax̱g̱alts’ap, delivering public education, assessments, and coordinated mitigation work to reduce wildfire risks.

The FireSmart Coordinator ensures the effective delivery of FireSmart initiatives in alignment with provincial guidelines and under the direction of the Fire Chief.

Key Responsibilities:

Community Engagement & Education

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the FireSmart Program.
  • Coordinate and implement FireSmart programming tailored to the needs of the community.
  • Plan, facilitate, and participate in public education events and outreach sessions.
  • Organize and execute wildfire resiliency projects in collaboration with the community.
  • Develop and distribute internal, external, and public communications related to FireSmart activities.
  • Promote FireSmart education, training, and certification opportunities.
  • Conduct site visits and outreach in rural and remote areas.
  • Coordinate FireSmart home and community assessments.
  • Guide on applying FireSmart principles to private and community lands.
  • Identify and prioritize high-risk wildfire zones within the community for focused mitigation efforts.

Leadership & Program Management

  • Lead budget development and financial oversight of FireSmart programs.
  • Manage year-end financial activities, including grant reporting and compliance.
  • Identify, apply for, and manage new FireSmart grant opportunities.
  • Act as project lead for the Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP), coordinating with consultants, foresters and stakeholders.
  • Oversee the delivery of public education and outreach initiatives funded through Community Resiliency Investment (CRI) or Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) FireSmart funding.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and coordinate FireSmart staff and volunteers
  • Ensure consistent use of FireSmart Marks and adherence to brand guidelines.

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Liaise with BC FireSmart Committee member agencies and related organizations.
  • Lead or actively participate in a Community FireSmart and Resiliency Collaborative (CFRC).
  • Collaborate with Planning Department to integrate FireSmart strategies into local planning and development.
  • Support CWRP development and project implementation, including fuel management and prescribed fire initiatives.
  • Coordinate with BCWS zone staff to promote cross-training and inter-agency collaboration.
  • Organize FireSmart-related training in wildfire science, structure protection, and mitigation strategies for staff and stakeholders.
  • Other duties as required

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :

  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work diplomatically with officials, colleagues, community members, and the public.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultural awareness.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation delivery.
  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate effectively within diverse teams.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and social media platforms.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant leadership experience, including supervision, facilitation, and contract management.
  • Background in public safety education and/or emergency preparedness
  • Completion of FireSmart 101 and the Wildfire Risk Reduction (WRR) course.
  • Interest in emergency management, forestry, firefighting, or environmental sciences.
  • Knowledge of FireSmart.
  • Experience volunteering or working in community-based programs.
  • Comfortable with outdoor physical activities such as light manual labour (e.g., clearing brush, moving debris).
  • Local FireSmart Representative (LFR) certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Successful completion of a Canada Criminal Record Check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in FireSmart and wildfire mitigation programs.
  • Completion of cultural sensitivity training.
