Lax̱g̱alts’ap Residents Will Travel to Alberta for Outdoor Learning Conference

March 25, 2026 – Lax̱g̱alts’ap, B.C. – Seven Lax̱g̱alts’ap residents will join LVG’s Food Sovereignty coordinators Jacob McKay and Ivan Lincoln, Jr. to an outdoor learning conference in Banff, Alberta from May 7 – 9, 2026.

Rory Innes, Genevieve McKay, Destanie Clayton, Braiden Wells, Alfred Stewart, Jason Mckay and Francine Stewart will attend the 3-day conference themed ’Place and Pedagogy: Where Learning Happens’ at Banff National Park that will cover three main topics, including climate change and environmental education, Indigenous knowledge & perspectives and health and well-being.

The seven community members replied to LVG’s call for applications that was launched in late January by submitting their reflections on what food sovereignty means to them.

The intent of the sponsored trip to the outdoor conference is to enhance knowledge and skills and encourage community participation from all ages in food sovereignty initiatives in Lax̱g̱alts’ap throughout the year.

“This project depends on community involvement”, said Food Sovereignty Coordinator Jacob McKay.  “From youth learning the land, to families growing food at home, to elders sharing their knowledge.”

Community involvement means:

  • Helping in the greenhouse
  • Supporting household gardens
  • Learning land-based food practices
  • Sharing knowledge with others

Lax̱g̱alts’ap Village Government and staff commend the seven community members for their willingness to participate.  If you are a community member interested in learning more, feel free to pop into the greenhouse or community garden and roll up your sleeves!

Funding for this trip was made possible through grant funding received from First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC).

Si’aamhl wilsim̓!
